Overview

German companies make an important contribution to Taiwan's economic development. They are important employers and an integral part of the supply chains for Taiwanese semiconductor production. They also play an important role in the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy and automotive sectors.

The majority of German companies are based in the north of the island, primarily in Taipei and New Taipei. Over the last ten years, however, the importance of the southern regions has increased. Taichung in particular, with its mechanical engineering cluster, is another important location for German companies in Taiwan.

Taiwan is primarily a sales and service market for German companies. Just over a third are primarily involved in sales and marketing activities, while one in four companies offer services. Around 15 percent also operate production facilities in Taiwan. Almost one in ten German companies focuses on trade. Procurement and purchasing as well as research and development only play a role for a small proportion of companies.
