Arbitration Court at DIHK – fast, flexible, and digital

  • News

Economic disputes and legal risks can place a significant burden on businesses—especially in international trade. While political discussions about reforming arbitration procedures continue, the new Arbitration Court (SGH), an initiative by DIHK, the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs), and the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs), officially launched operations in December. It offers solutions from the business community, for the business community: fast, cost-effective, and high-quality.

Schiedsgerichtshof DIHK

The SGH enables a confidential process and legally enforceable decisions outside of state courts. If needed, mediation can be used beforehand—especially when ongoing business relationships should be preserved.

With this new institution, DIHK, IHKs, and AHKs reaffirm their commitment to supporting businesses in resolving disputes independently and reliably—both in Germany and internationally. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular can benefit from the flexible procedures.

Speed, efficiency, and flexibility

According to SGH arbitration rules, cases are intended to be resolved within 12 months—or even within six months via a fast-track process if required. With only one instance of decision-making, the process saves both time and costs compared to traditional court proceedings, which can take years.

The SGH also offers tailored solutions. Parties can choose their arbitrators, set German or English as the procedural language, and freely select the legal framework and place of arbitration—be it Berlin, Singapore, or elsewhere. Hearings can also take place via video conference, and SGH rulings are enforceable in most countries around the world.

Confidential dispute resolution

Unlike public court cases, which often expose documents and hearings to the public, SGH arbitration remains private. This helps protect sensitive business information. Because the arbitrators are selected by the parties, neutrality and fairness are ensured.

Digital process for efficient case management

At the heart of the SGH is a digital platform that manages the entire arbitration process—from the initial request to final billing. Available 24/7 from anywhere in the world, the platform streamlines case handling and improves user experience.

Strengthening Germany as a business hub

In addition to a strong judicial system, a competitive business environment also needs efficient alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The SGH by DIHK offers just that.
