About Peter Mertes

The location of the vineyard is essential for the development of aromatic Riesling grapes. In the town of Bernkastel-Kues, right in the heart of the picturesque Mosel Valley in south-western Germany, the mixture of fertile soil, steep slopes and ample sun exposure allows for the growth of especially flavorful Riesling. No wonder it has long been home to some of the most sought-after vineyards in Germany. Our partner, family-owned vineyard Peter Mertes, have been growing wine in the region since 1924 and currently occupy around 100 hectares of land along the Mosel and Saar rivers, including some of the best Riesling growing sites in the country for instance the world-famous “Wehlener Sonnenuhr”.

Riesling 101

Did you know that our beloved Riesling white wine dates back to the 15th century? Through several written references, including the Herbal Encyclopedia by influential botanist Hieronymus Bock, the grape variety can be traced back to have originated from the Rhine Valley in South-west Germany several centuries back. As of today, it is the most grown grape variety in Germany, covering about a quarter of the country's total vineyard area. It is often mentioned in the same breath with world-class white wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, underlining its status as an established quality choice among consumers all over the world.

But what makes for the distinct aromatic, refreshing aroma of Riesling wine? The grape variety is deemed “terroir-expressive”, meaning that the place of origin greatly influences the taste of the finished product. Accordingly, the different wine areas of the Rhine Valley are each famous for their unique flavors, ranging from acidic apple notes in cooler areas, over sweeter peach and honey notes with late-ripening varieties in warmer climates, all the way to distinct petrol aromas that many experienced wine-enthusiasts value.
