Kaohsiung, Taiwan – No need to travel more than 9,000 kilometers to experience the vibrant harbour culture of Hamburg, Germany! Co-organized by the German Trade Office Taipei (GTO), Kaohsiung Music Center (KMC) and Ministry of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Harbour Beats 2026 will take place from October 31 to November 1, starting at 3:00 PM each day at KMC's Coral Zone, with free admission for all visitors. The two-day festival will feature six German and Taiwanese music acts, nearly 50 food and lifestyle stalls, and the Taiwan debut of Hamburg-based outdoor film collective A Wall is a Screen. Together with partners including German sleep brand Emma® and Hotel Nikko Kaohsiung, the festival will bring German music, art, cuisine, and lifestyle to Kaohsiung's waterfront, inviting visitors to enjoy a weekend filled with German flair.

Dr. Eva Langerbeck, Chief Representative and Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei, said: "Kaohsiung and Hamburg not only share a strong maritime identity but also a friendship spanning more than 25 years. Through Harbour Beats, we hope to bring the spirit of Hamburg to Kaohsiung, allowing visitors to experience its music, art, cuisine, and lifestyle without travelling all the way to Germany. We are particularly pleased to see German artists, businesses, and cultural institutions joining forces for this event, demonstrating that German-Taiwanese cooperation goes beyond trade and economic figures. It is also about bringing cultures into everyday life and creating meaningful connections between people."

From Hamburg Harbour to Kaohsiung Harbour: Cross-cultural Music and Culinary Experiences

Since becoming sister ports in 1999, Kaohsiung and Hamburg have continued to strengthen their ties. In 2025, Hamburg named a pedestrian bridge in its historic Speicherstadt district the "Kaohsiung Bridge" (Kaohsiung-Brücke), symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two port cities, separated by more than 9,000 kilometers. This year's Harbour Beats takes that friendship one step further by turning it into cultural experiences that everyone can enjoy.

Among the musical highlights are two artists from Hamburg. BOVIY, recognized by German VOGUE as one of the country's most promising emerging talents, brings a distinctive sound blending indie electronic music and experimental synthesizers. Sophia Kennedy, making her Taiwan debut, is known for her visually evocative compositions and unique performance style, offering audiences a glimpse into Hamburg's contemporary avant-garde music scene.

In promotional videos for the festival, both artists shared their personal connections to Hamburg's harbour and their excitement about performing in another vibrant port city. They also expressed their enthusiasm for discovering Taiwanese cuisine, particularly scallion pancakes and tofu pudding. The Taiwanese line-up features The Chairs, L8ching, Lu Yun, and German-Taiwanese rapper Majin, showcasing the diversity and creativity of musical exchange from Hamburg to Kaohsiung.

Visitors can also explore a German-themed market featuring traditional favorites such as German sausages, pork knuckles, Bavarian beer, and whisky from Saxony, alongside creative burgers inspired by Taiwanese and other Asian flavors. In their promotional videos, the German artists also recommended some of their favorite dishes from home, including sauerkraut, Bratwurst, and Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad), offering visitors a taste of German culinary culture.

Hamburg's Outdoor Cinema Makes Its Taiwan Debut, While Emma® Brings Relaxation to the Waterfront

Another festival highlight is the Taiwan debut of Hamburg-based film collective A Wall is a Screen, bringing its distinctive outdoor short-film walking tour to Kaohsiung. Founded in Hamburg in 2003, the concept transforms urban walls and building façades into temporary cinema screens, inviting audiences to explore the city on foot while discovering short films along the way. At Harbour Beats, the collective will use the architecture of Kaohsiung Music Center's Coral Zone as its canvas, creating a unique encounter between German film art and Kaohsiung's waterfront landscape.

Sven Schwarz, representative of A Wall is a Screen, commented: "Kaohsiung's harbour area is a perfect setting for this experience, with its unique mix of waterfront, public space and architecture. We are very excited to bring A Wall is a Screen to Taiwan for the first time and to turn the walls of Kaohsiung Music Center into screens!"

Beyond music and film, visitors can also slow down and enjoy a more relaxing side of German lifestyle. Emma®, the German sleep brand and a new member of GTO's Business Alliance, is sponsoring the festival's secondary stage, transforming part of the Coral Zone into a cozy relaxation space featuring Emma® mattresses, chill DJ performances, German children's picture-book storytelling, and evening readings of Grimm's fairy tales. Visitors are invited to lie back, unwind, and enjoy stories and music against the backdrop of Kaohsiung's harbour at night, experiencing a creative combination of German comfort and culture.

The German lifestyle experience also extends beyond the festival grounds. Hotel Nikko Kaohsiung, the festival's accommodation partner, is offering a special promotion at its Rooftop Bar 22. During the festival period, Kaohsiung Music Center members who make a purchase at the bar and complete the designated social media check-in will receive a complimentary 230 ml glass of German beer, extending the festive atmosphere into the city.

German Businesses and Cultural Institutions Join Forces to Strengthen Cross-cultural Exchange

The festival is also supported by German businesses and organizations committed to strengthening ties in Taiwan. These include REYHER, a Hamburg-based company and one of Europe's leading suppliers of fasteners and fastener technology, with an established presence in Kaohsiung, as well as the German Taiwanese Dialogue Platform (GTDP), which promotes dialogue and exchange between civil societies in Germany and Taiwan.

The Goethe-Institut Taipei will also host a booth at the festival, introducing visitors to German language learning and contemporary German culture through interactive activities, offering another opportunity to discover Germany beyond music and cuisine.

Harbour Beats 2026 will take place on October 31 and November 1, starting at 3:00 PM each day at the Coral Zone of Kaohsiung Music Center, with free admission. Advance registration is required for selected activities. For further details and registration information, please visit the Kaohsiung Music Center's official event page.
