Diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of 14, Sabrina was forced to pause her studies. Her ninth-grade year dissolved into a blur of hospital stays and treatment schedules. While her peers were navigating their final year of middle school in classrooms, Sabrina was undergoing chemotherapy, relearning how to walk, and gradually regaining strength. Throughout this period, art became her lifeline, a means to stay connected with the world and to herself.
“Art isn’t just passion. It’s the strength that kept me holding on.” Sabrina reflects. “Even when I couldn’t hold a pencil steady, I still wanted to draw—because every stroke was a way to say, I’m still here.”
“In the Absence of Nine” traces Sabrina’s evolution as an artist across three chapters: her joyful early works in seventh and eighth grade; her imaginative illustrations born during long hospital stays; and her radiant post-treatment pieces, where colour returns as a symbol of healing and hope. Through fruit still-lifes, whimsical sweets, and expressive portraits, Sabrina tells a story not of what she missed, but of what she transformed.
