Smart Machinery Solutions have already become the key success factor in today’s modern manufacturing and will be crucial for the factory of tomorrow. Industry 4.0 will thus be the most exciting but also most challenging issue of the next few years. Currently, Germany is home to one of the strongest robotics and automation industries in the world. At 301 robots to every 10.000 workers, Germany has the highest robot density in Europe and the fourth highest in the world. With the German government promoting the “Industry 4.0” strategy, German small and medium-sized enterprises can leverage their engineering tradition, innovation and close ties between R&D clusters and industry applications to further strengthen Germany’s position as a global automation leader.

Taiwan’s answer to the global phenomenon of the “Industry 4.0” strategy is the “Smart Machinery Industry Promotion Initiative”, with the basis of building on top of the existing foundational precision machinery industry in Taiwan, and transforming the industry toward smart manufacturing. Taiwan is the 7th largest machinery related producer and 5th largest exporter in the world spanning different industries including aerospace, automobile, semi-conductors, textiles, and more. With the Smart Machinery Initiative, the combined capabilities of industry, academia, and research institute is framed to advance the manufacturing ecosystem and accelerate its transformation in line with the global market challenges. The Initiative is framed around three major high level strategies of "local linkage", "future linkage" and "international linkage", assisting Taiwan’s industry to overcome the technical challenges and market globalization challenges, working towards enabling industry momentum for growth. Currently, Taiwan has made three major steps in the development of smart manufacturing including the digitalization of industry and education, establish public version of a national IoT manufacturing platform, and aid in developing industrial applied technologies and services, successfully strengthening the basic capacity of Taiwan’s machinery industry to provide and utilize the right smart manufacturing technologies and services to accelerate the momentum of industrial development for both large enterprises and medium and small enterprises. The next wave for the Smart Machinery Initiative will focus on the emergence and maturation of new technologies including IoT, Artificial Intelligence, and 5G technologies, as well as further the footprint in the global smart manufacturing industry chain.

Germany and Taiwan share various similarities, both have highly innovative, export-driven economies with many world market leading companies. Thus, there is a very high potential for cooperation in various industries and the automation industry will certainly be a key sector in future German-Taiwanese cooperation. Together, Taiwan and Germany have the potential to perfectly complement each other and be able to offer world class Industry 4.0 solutions.
